Learning Phonotactics Using ILP
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper describes experiments on learning Dutch phonotactic rules using Inductive Logic Programming, a machine learning discipline based on inductive logical operators. Two different ways of approaching the problem are experimented with, and compared against each other as well as with related work on the task. The results show a direct correspodence between the quality and informedness of the background knowledge and the constructed theory, demostrating the ability of ILP to take good advantage of the prior domain knowledge available. Further research is outlined.

The Construct of Interlanguage Pragmatic Learning Strategies: Investigating Preferences of High vs. Low Pragmatic Performers
Interlanguage pragmatics (ILP) has witnessed a growing body of research in the past two decades. One of the under-explored domains of L2 pragmatics is the role of learning strategies specifically tailored for the development of ILP knowledge. Therefore, this investigation aimed to determine the significant interlanguage pragmatic learning strategies (IPLS) used by high vs. low L2 pragmatic achi...
متن کاملGradual Learning and Gradient Phonotactics
Gradual learning as gradual adjustment of constraint values (Rosenblatt 1962, Boersma 1998) automatically yields weighting values that can be used in an account of gradient phonotactics, if the grammar is formulated in terms of Harmonic Grammar (HG; Legendre, Smolensky and Miyata 1990). I propose a new metric for gradient acceptability in HG, and show how a complex case of gradient phonotactics...
متن کاملThe Error-driven Ranking Model of the Early Stage of the Acquisition of Phonotactics: an Initial Result on Restrictiveness *
Nine-month-old infants are already sensitive to the distinction between licit and illicit forms (Jusczyk et al. 1993). They thus display knowledge of the target adult phonotactics at an early stage when morphology is plausibly still lagging behind (Hayes 2004) and the acquisition of the native language lexicon has barely begun (Fenson et al. 1994). How can this early stage of the acquisition of...
متن کاملLearning the Logic of Simple Phonotactics
We report on experiments which demonstrate that by abductive inference it is possible to learn enough simple phonotactics to distinguish words from non-words for a simpliied set of Dutch, the monosyllables. The monosyllables are distinguished in input so that segmenta-tion is not problematic. Frequency information is withheld as is negative data. The methods are all tested using tenfold cross-v...
متن کاملBoosting Descriptive ILP for Predictive Learning in Bioinformatics
Boosting is an established propositional learning method to promote the predictive accuracy of weak learning algorithms, and has achieved much empirical success. However, there have been relatively few efforts to apply boosting to Inductive Logic Programming (ILP) approaches. We investigate the use of boosting descriptive ILP systems, by proposing a novel algorithm for generating classification...
